I am not the Debian package maintainer; so this is not an official
answer. But I will tell you what I do know. The Debian lilo
package is now maintained by Joachim Wiedorn (who is now also
the upstream maintainer) and Matt Arnold. lilo will be included
with Squeeze. The current version in testing is 1:22.8-10.
There are no release-critical bugs at this time.

I don't know for sure, but I've never seen a release upgrade
replace a boot loader. And I have no reason to suspect it will
this time. Install a newer version, yes. But, say, change
lilo to grub2? I doubt it.

If for some reason you want to keep the current version, the
easiest solution is to simply put it on hold. For example,

   aptitude hold lilo

I haven't done a new install of Squeeze in over six months;
but as far as I know, the Debian installer has not removed
lilo as a boot loader option. Somebody please correct me
if that is no longer the case.

lilo is being actively maintained, both upstream and in Debian.
There are currently no plans to remove it.
