Thanks for all the responses.  I did

dpkg --get-selections | grep nvidia | xargs sudo aptitude purge --assume-yes
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

then rebooted.  All is well, so far.  This has restored the pc-speaker beep
and improved the console font.
