There are some HP printers models out there (mostly multifunction 
devices) that besides the PPD file require additional "blob" code (closed 
firmware or plugins, or whatever HP name it :-P) to properly run  and 
therefore CUPS cannot help here because it cannot download the required 
code to get the device "up and working" ;-(

Best (and easiest) to setup are PostScript based printers, beyond that 
the linux support for each printer brand and model varies a lot!
