I was somewhat expecting to see cdrom entries and perhaps those would
have explained the hangs and could have been removed.  But all good
here.

That doesn't ever indicate out of date programs.  It updates the index
files of packages that are available in the repositories listed in the
sources.list file.  Because that operation takes a few seconds it
isn't done automatically.  It is only done upon explicit request.  So
before running the upgrade command it the update is usually done to
make sure that the index files are current.

Then as far as I can see everything is okay with your system.  I don't
know why synaptic is causing you problems.  Because the underlying
commands seem to be working okay.

So it won't launch a new root terminal.  But existing root terminals
still work.  Gotcha.

I have no idea what is happening in that subsystem.  I never use it.
