It could be related to acpi power management and the xorg server. 

A quick test: disable the screensaver and do not put the screen into power 
saving mode and check if you are still facing the gdm crash (just for 
one day, then remember to restore the settings after the test. You can 
still power on/off the display by pressing the front button).

For ".xsession-errors" file I see nothing woth to mention. Those errors 
you are getting are also hitting my squeeze box. I guess they are Iceweasel 
related, yes.

Yes, I would open a report so developers can take a look into this. You
can also add the Ubuntu's bug report as it seems more people are 
experiencing this.
