Just for the record, there are a lot of newer modems out there that are
external, but still not "real" modems, but Winmodems.  Serial modems
are always real modems, but USB modems are often (usually?) Winmodems.
So anything that plugs into a serial port will be a real, hardware
modem, but you'll need to be careful with USB modems.
