An external modem isn't a PCI device. It's connected to a serial port
on your computer.

And I completely agree that using an external modem is the way to
go. You can be pretty sure that it'll work when it's documentation or
specifications say that it can be used to send/recieve faxes. Setting
up hylafax can be quite a pita, and using an external modem is almost
a requirement because you can see what's going on. You can't see
what's going on with an internal modem.

Besides, IIRC, there used to be internal modems that weren't actually
modems because they did part of the work by software, and that
software was only available for windoze.

After all, you might be far better off by just buying a fax device
than bothering to get something to work with hylafax.
