You can install what network services you need e.g (CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, TFTP, AFP, RSYNC) for repositories for Debian systems. Additionally depending on your Linux kernel you can get great hardware support for RAID and hard disk controller. The only 'gotcha' to using a full blown (desktop environment) debian system is performance. The fastest data transfer rates would be achieved on a headless system.
