What I have done when I needed something that wasn't available is to
compile and do the install with checkinstall. It builds a deb, and installs it in
/usr/local/bin . It's NOT a Debian-approved deb, but does fine for strictly
local installations and can be removed with dpkg if needed. Checkinstall is
available in the repository for your flavour of Debian.
