Try aptitude in interactive mode, it is far better for this type of operation.

Removing mono is easy enough, as it is not a part of the gnome core
platform (and probably never will be), it is just that many distros include
mono apps in the main Gnome meta-package.

Removing Mono will remove a few major apps:
tomboy (note taking, try gnote)

banshee (music player, many others)

beagle (search, try tracker)

f-spot (picasa-like photo management, digikam (KDE) is really the only
comparable thing I know of, but EOG and gthumb are good image
viewers with somewhat more limited abilities)
