Create a new user and run things as that user. Any change?

Thanks for the idea.  After creating a new user the same problems still apply.  My suspicions are further endorsed that this may be a machine issue, only because on my old machine running testing (through Lenny and Squeeze), the game played fine.  Now I can't even get the Lenny version to work properly.

But what would be the issue on my machine that would lead to these kinds of problems I wonder?
