Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, I tried both your suggestions, and still no joy: the xorg.conf with no INPUT sections fails, and when I use the options suggested, I get only (WW) RADEON(0): Option "AutoAddDevices" is not used (WW) RADEON(0): Option "AllowEmptyInput" is not used Further, when startx leads only to a frozen screen without mouse or keyboard, htop shows about sixty instances of /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon, all with the same PID and all doing nothing. I can kill them, and nothing changes. Is that a clue? If so, please hit me with a clue-bat. -- JohnRChamplin@columbus.rr.com ==================================================== GPG key 1024D/99421A63 2005-01-05 EE51 79E9 F244 D734 A012 1CEC 7813 9FE9 9942 1A63 gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 99421A63
