X/hal issue with upgrade

I upgraded everything sid today on my Thinkpad A31, and afterwards, X
failed with this message:
(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse$
(WW) Disabling ThinkPad Keyboard
(WW) Disabling IBM TrackPoint

I added
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off"
to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and was rewarded with continued failure and a
new message in /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
(WW) RADEON(0): Option "AllowEmptyInput" is not used

Finally I just downgraded all the xserver-xorg stuff (needing to use
the dreaded "dpkg --force-depends" command) and also hal
(just to be on the safe side). Now everything works again.

What would have been the Debian way?
