BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)

Using debian 5 stable, when playing some videos I'm getting the error:

    BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)

and the video player crashes. This happens regardless of what application I use
to play the video: totem, vlc, mplayer, etc. It's a video driver problem.
Googling the error message I found lots of bug reports for debian and other
distros (especially ubuntu) that say that the solution is to add Option
"AccelMethod" "EXA" to the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf. But for me
this doesn't make any difference. Can anyone help?

My display controller is a Radeon Mobility M6 LY.

Attaching a full crash output from totem, and my xorg.conf.

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 58 error_code 11 request_code 140 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
