Oh, no! All you need to run is
make-kpkg -rfakeroot --initrd --revision=custom.1.0 kernel_image
sudo dpkg -i ../linux-image-2.6.29custom1.0_....deb
Maybe that should sort things out. Let me know if you face further problems.
