Why not to have it mounted all the time?
I have this in /etc/fstab:

/dev/sda4  /mount/fat  vfat quiet,fmask=111,dmask=000,iocharset=utf8,codepage=852,shortname=mixed  0  2

If more people use your system, you can play with uid,dig,fmask and dmask
options.
