The modprobe at the commandline managed to turn the red microphone
icon on the laptop white (or I that's what did it).

The effect of that was to eliminate "/proc/asound/card0/codec#1:Codec:
LSI ID 1040" from the grep above.

I didn't see this reply until I stumbled across it in a google
search.
