That should be possible.

Keep/add entries for etch-security and etch-proposed-updates in your
sources.list, then you'll get the security updates.  Security support
for Etch ends in a year, but by that time you should be able to install
a newer kernel from Lenny-and-a-Half (if it is released by that time) or
Squeeze.
