I have to agree with this.  I got my new laptop a month ago and have
been struggling with wireless on and off (because I'd get so
frustrated) for 3 weeks.  I finally gave up network-manager and
installed WICD (installing it will get rid of network-manager).

I too use static IPs.  With WICD it just worked.  Switch over.  I
don't think you'll be disappointed.
