I'm running Debian unstable on my home machine. I just verified that it
doesn't work here either. Maybe Ubuntu has a patched version of
gnome-volume-manager, which seems to be causing the problem. If there are
several users logged in, everybody has a gnome-volume-manager process
running and all of these processes try to talk to HAL whenever a device is
inserted.
