Switching RAM should prolly not change the ID, but motherboard, CPU,
disks etc are all fair game. And as long as USB does not play a role,
I can live with _any_ hardware change creating a new ID as long as it is
deterministic and reproducable.

You could take the serial numbers from various bits of hardware, and MD5 or SHA1 (yes, I know these are cryptographically weak, but remember the limited scope of the task at hand) the concatenated string.
