Because I spoke to the author and I did some debugging to confirm that the 
strings are indeed in unicode. I have also tried different versions of anki, 
versions which used to work doesn't work anymore.

But you're right, even though it seems unlikely, it doesn't rule out that the 
bug may be in anki.
