The way I do it...

Create a file /etc/network/if-up.d/firewall.sh , make sure it is executable. In that file put all the iptables rules you want and since it is bash scripting you can get pretty fancy. Then in /etc/network/interfaces add the following line to one of the interface definitions, 'up /etc/network/if-up.d/firewall.sh'. That is all you need.
