| That error message means the pop server cannot open the maildir
directory for
| the given user. This can happen for 2 reasons.
| 1. the path to maildirs is wrong

ok, postfix seems to be writing mail to /var/mail/username is this what
its suppose to do? when I send mail from elsewhere, thats where I find it.

| 2. the maildir has not been created yet.

there is no directory on this machine named maildir or Maildir. I ran
"locate Maildir", the only thing that came up was a readme in
/doc/procmail. so....... the only reference I found to maildir was in
/etc/courier/pop3d-ssl so I changed the MAILDIRPATH to /var/mail. after
restart, now when I try to download mail with thunderbird I get the same
error message. "sending of password did not succeed. mail server
mail.reillyblog.com responded: chdir Maildir.

Do I need to physically create a directory named "Maildir"? and under
what directory does it get placed? Thanks.

| If its #1, recheck the courier configuration to see if the path for the
| maildirs is correctly given. Basically, the path where Postfix saves the
| mails should be the same for the Courier to go and open up the mails.
|
| if its #2, Simply send an email to the given user before checking his
mail.
| Courier does not create the maildir folders automatically so if this is a
| brand new user, forst send the user a test mail so that the maildor
folders
| will be created and then check email from thunderbird.
