I ran 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config' and chose the dial on demand option. This worked perfectly.

I am not too familiar with exim4 and I guess the above was a temporary fix. But I outta read up on it and see what I can do.

I believe this MTA handles all the local mail?

Anyways the above fixed worked.

I really should read the debian ref manual. There seems to be a lot of useful info there.
