They have been changing the way debconf works for xorg, now
that xorg is increasingly capable of running with a more minimal
xorg.conf (or none at all).

Have you tried both EXA and XAA? Also check lsmod to see if the drm
and  i915 kernel modules are being used, and see if there are any
errors or warnings in the xorg log.

As far as annoying video cards go, I wanted some 3D, but couldn't
stand the "nvidia" driver, much less "fglrx", so I got a 9250 (~$45)
which has full 2d and 3d with the open "radeon" driver. It plays
Quake III, so I'm happy. I'll probably upgrade to a recent Radeon
once the "RadeonHD" driver is ready.
