/etc/hostname is "debian", while /etc/mailname is "localhost.localdomain".

I think I fixed it, though. I copied over my old /etc/hosts, which
had, among other things, the line

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost debian

The new-until-recently replaced had

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
127.0.0.1 debian

Apparently having the FQDN for localhost after the alias was one of my
problems. A "chmod 01777 /var/mail" has me back in business.

Thanks, everyone who responded!
