I ran the Nvidia X server Settings menu. It showed me as being in 1680X1050, 
which shows as the native resolution and Best Fit resolution, so it is 
working the way it always has. And under the GPU section it has GPU-0 GeForce 
7300LE, which is my video card.. below that it has DFP-0 (Dell E207WFP) which 
is my 20 inch flat panel monitor.. SO, I am happy !
my old xorg.conf did have the Modes up to 1680x1050, this one doesn't but it 
booted up to that resolution.
at this point I'm going to say IT WORKS, so don't mess with it:)
I have done the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, and I will again, but for now, 
I'll leave well enough alone.
