I'm on dialup and like to get small things if I can.

Something I've found very helpful to have when working with flaky
hardware is a totally different kernel to boot. I have had good luck
with the OpenBSD boot floppy (an actual floppy, their current
floppy42.fs) or cdrom42.fs (a 2.88 MB file). The BSD dmesg boot
messages are _very_ informative and are used in BSD land the way lspci
is used on debian-boot.

If this boots you'll at least know that the hardware should be fine. If
not, perhaps you'll get a different error message that could help to
track down the problem.

Doug.
