Not necessarily, although if your other devices do, I would say that the
scanner probably would, too.
Still, try issuing
$ sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog
and then plugging in your scanner. If the scanner is being detected,
something will definitely show up in there.
Also, what does
$ lsusb
say when you have the scanner plugged in?
