My DVD drive is an NEC and I have been burning DVDs with it since I 
bought it, no problems yet. I use Debian Sid though. What is the error 
that you get when you try to burn say a DVD? Does it recognize the DVD 
media though (check with dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/dvd).
