One main difference is that the real cost of the newspaper is paid
almost entirely from advertisers, not readers. Also, any newspaper has
a well defined and restricted editorial policy, which every potential
reader knows in advance and is free to ignore or accept. A software
magazine which were filled without notice, at random intervals, by
totally unrelated articles on everything from knitting to darwinism
would last very little. So your comparison make no sense, it's just
not applicable.
