Interesting. Perhaps it is not opening an actual xterm, but rather a
different emulator? Maybe it is set up to open your default terminal
emulator, which may not be xterm. Is
/etc/alternatives/x-terminal-emulator pointing to xterm? If not,
changing that might fix your problem.
