Clarification: I have a perfectly running system.

        princess:~# grep devpts /etc/fstab
        princess:~# grep devpts /proc/mounts
        devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,nosuid,noexec 0 0

hmmm...

Do you have 

udevfs on /dev? from df:

        udev    10240    104    10136    2% /dev

If not it, is failing in the /etc/init.d/udev script during startup.
