A good reference for nearly _everything Debian_ can be found in the
debian-reference package. I had a simular question recently and,
found the answer, and a lot more in there.
I'm rather embarassed that, after using Debian for 14 years, I had
never before really looked though it before. Although not completely
up-to-date, it has a wealth of information and will save you a lot of
time finding answers to your problems. As me how I know. :-(
