Do you mean something like this?

~$ telnet localhost smtp
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 think.homenet ESMTP Postfix (Debian/GNU)
help
502 5.5.2 Error: command not recognized
quit
221 2.0.0 Bye
Connection closed by foreign host


But my local postfix did identify itself first.
