RedHat freely releases their source RPMs, so you could grab one of those and build it yourself. Alternatively, CentOS, WhiteBox and SciLinux (among others) all provide recompiled binaries of RedHat's sources. You could use a kernel provided by one of those vendors. One thing of which you need to be aware is that certain things that are tied closely to the kernel (udev and others) may misbehave if you try and use a kernel that is too old or behaves differently than expected. > Has anyone tried something like this ever? > I'm sure it has been tried, but I am not sure by whom.
