Odd. On my system, here is what /etc/libnss-ldap.conf looks like:

base dc=connexer,dc=com
uri ldaps://santiago.connexer.com/
ldap_version 3

Then, my /etc/ldap/ldap.conf has this:

BASE    dc=connexer,dc=com
URI     ldaps://santiago.connexer.com
TLS_CACERT      /etc/ldap/cacert.pem

Then, my /etc/nsswitch.conf has this:

passwd:         compat ldap
group:          compat ldap
shadow:         compat ldap
hosts:          files dns
networks:       files
protocols:      db files
services:       db files
ethers:         db files
rpc:            db files
netgroup:       nis
