FTR, works here in bog standard bash running in aterm.

andrew@basement:~$ mkdir ss
andrew@basement:~$ touch ss/uuu
andrew@basement:~$ cat ss/*u <tab>
andrew@basement:~$ cat ss/uuu 

no need for the trailing *
