In this case, a key is a public gpg key, half of the public-private gpg
key combination used for public key cryptography. Lots of folks
digitally sign their messages with a key to allow others to determine
the author of a message. And sometimes, folks go even further and use
their private key and someone elses public key (from the keyserver) to send
an encrypted, signed private post. If you send your regular mail on
postcards for all to see, then you dont need this. But most folks send
mail in a sealed, private letter, like what pgp and gpg do.
