Re: static IP

Hi,

I've only just joined here, and have only seen this message, not the preceding ones in the thread. I'll try to help, but my apologies if I end up stating the obvious, or misunderstand the context.

This comment, together with the fact that you're using private IP addresses (192.168.*.*) suggests to me that you have only one static IP address. Is this correct? If I'm on the right wavelength here, this means that, as you rightly identify, you can either have it pointing to your router (as you have at the moment), or to your Linux box, and have that do the routing. Again, as you say, the latter option means you'll have to have it switched on all the time, or not be able to access the internet through your other machine.

Again, if I'm getting the context right, you need to read up on how to set up a webserver behind a firewall, as that's what your router is acting as. Your router needs to redirect incoming requests on port 80 to your Linux machine, and do NAT (network address address translation) on the outgoing stuff; probably it's already doing the latter, but not the former, and for that you'll need to set up the appropriate firewall rule in the router.

I'm no expert on this stuff, but I hope this may have been of some help.

Cheers,

Nikhil.
