Just for your info: on my laptop the results are as follows:
vladimir:~>  xrdb -q | grep dpi
Xft.dpi:        96.000000
vladimir:~> xdpyinfo | grep resolution
  resolution:    96x96 dots per inch


Yes, it's GNOME (Etch) as well...
