Thank you.  That cleared it up.  It's not that I am a freak for open
source programs, I have the 'real' nvidia drivers mainly because on this
system the 'nv' open source drivers use 40% of my cpu.

What surprises me about the situation is that Ubuntu does not play mp3
files 'out of the box' due to license issues.  They do however provide
wireless drivers that have the same restrictions....

Perhaps this will change with Feisty, but I won't know, because I am not
going to run it.  I'm sticking with Debian.
