When using mbox, deleting a message by marking it deleted and then
hiding it is *much* faster than actually moving it to the Trash.
That's why there is the need to compact folders.

Actually, though, I'm very surprised that Icedove does not compact
on exit.

Too true.  When using Evolution & IMAP, emptying the trash and
compacting folders are similar but not exact, and don't (well,
didn't: I now use Icedove) act the way I would expect.

But it compacts folders on exit!
