alsaconf did that for me. I checked it anyway, though. The stock kernel didn't 
have the driver for the onboard audio. That's why I made a custom one. No 
problem with volume there. The problem with the custom kernel is that I can't 
mount a data cd. I can get an audio cd to mount, but only through a weird 
process.
