You could try to use the magic sysreq key to get debugging info after
the hang, if you can reproduce it at the console and the kernel turns
out to be not too wedged for that to work.

Thanks for the suggestion. With my computer happily running Sid, the magic sysreq key combinations appear to work, but I didn't notice any response to the magic sysreq key combinations when a MIDI-related lock-up occurred.

So I'm still in search of some steps to debugging a full lock-up when MIDI files are being played in combination with heavy disk activity.
