I solved the problem by installing extra fonts; I cannot remember
exactly which fonts I installed but from memory (and synaptic ;-)) I
installed the following packages (the first being the most important one
I think):
ttf-bitstream-vera
ttf-arabeyes
ttf-junicode
ttf-kacst
