Thanks for the reply Liam. unfortunately I am using kde. I also do not use 
gconf. I remember it spewing all sorts of unnecessary info 
in /var/log/messages and purged it out of my system completely. Dont know if 
the situation has changed recently. But if anyone has worked this out for 
KDE, could you please post your solution?
