Thanks for the answers.
I guess I will try rsnapshot and rdiff-backup because although the rsync
job now works OK with --exclude /hdb5, I cannot boot from it: it keeps
booting the partition that it came from, although I adjusted
/hdb5/etc/fstab and reran lilo to point to the newly copied partition.

You did edit /etc/lilo.conf as well, didn't you...

I did. I can't figure it out.

1. Changed /etc/fstab on the copy:

...
/dev/hdc5 / ext2 defaults,errors=remount-ro              0       1
...

2. Changed /etc/lilo.conf from the originating partition to refer to the copy:

...
image=/hdb5/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17.14-ck1
        label=B5-617UX+
        root=/dev/hdc5
        append="apm=on ddcon=1 video=vesafb:ypan,1024x768-32@85 quiet"
        initrd=/hdb5/boot/initrd.img-2.6.17.14-ck1
        read-only
...

3. Boot B5-617UX+ and what does df show?

/dev/hdc3              7691004   3443139   3857084  48% /

The originating partition.
