Check if you have the package "zeroconf" installed. It is known to do
this kind of "helpful" automatic reconfiguration of NICs for an ad-hoc
network. If this little pest is present on your system then you should
purge it with great vengeance. (It often gets installed inadvertently as
a recommendation of some other networking-related package.)
